Endovascular Repair for TAA
Article Taken from Covenant Healthcare
Norbert Baumgartner, MD is the first
Cardiovascular/Thoracic surgeon north of Detroit to utilize a new treatment for
patients with thoracic aortic aneurysms (TAA).
Endovascular repair, a relatively new procedure for the treatment of TAA, is
less invasive than open surgery. "The significant benefits of this repair
over the old repair is that is eliminates a lot of the major complications,"
says Dr. Baumgartner. "Especially the risk for paraplegia, which with an
open procedure is 15 percent or less. That is a huge benefit." The
recovery is also much quicker and easier for the patient. The procedure
involves sealing off the aneurysm by placing the endovascular graft inside of
the diseased aorta, re-lining and making a new path for blood flow.
