EECP

MCVI now has a non-invasive treatment option for patients suffering from chronic angina. This therapy is for patients who have failed medical therapy, and are not candidates for angioplasty or bypass surgery.  MCVI is the only facility north of Lansing or Detroit to offer Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP) therapy.

The therapy takes one hour a day, five days a week for a total of thirty-five hours over seven weeks.  Little preparation is necessary.  Patients are asked to not eat or drink an hour and a half before the treatment and not to take their diuretics until after the daily session.  Many patients often nap, listen to music, or watch television during the treatment.

During therapy, patients are wrapped in a set of three air filled cuffs that inflate during diastole to increase blood flow to the coronary arteries. The increase in blood flow has been associated with a reduction in angina and nitroglycerin usage.
